We finally have something to choose from! More than three months have passed since the release of the Radeon RX 5700 XT, and custom (and therefore more interesting, faster, cooler and quieter) versions of this video card are already filling the shelves of computer stores. For example, our website has published reviews of such models as SAPPHIRE PULSE Radeon RX 5700 XT and GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC. Now we invite you to get acquainted with the ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC — perhaps the coolest modification of the Radeon RX 5700 XT.

You can read more about the possibilities of the RDNA architecture in our large theoretical review. When comparing the characteristics of the reference version and ROG STRIX, it immediately catches the eye that the ASUS model has a significantly higher Boost frequency. The game mode is enabled by default, which is 2010 MHz in Boost mode, which is 105 MHz more than the AMD reference model. In the OC Tweaker application, you can turn on the overclocker mode — in it the GPU frequency will increase by another 25 MHz.
Interestingly, at the time of writing, the ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT was asking for an average of $320. The reference, which the 3DNews test lab has a lot of complaints about, cost $320. At the same time, for $ 320 you can buy a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER — for example, the DUAL-RTX2070S-O8G-EVO model is still the same ASUS. This is also why I was interested in comparing the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT with the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, and not with its direct competitor, the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER.
There was nothing unusual included with the ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC: paper documentation, a disk with drivers and related software, and two Velcro ties — that’s the whole set of a premium device.

When you look at the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT, you can’t help but recognize an ASUS graphics card in it — the presented design is already strongly associated with Republic of Gamers graphics adapters. So, the hero of today’s testing will be quite difficult to distinguish from the recently tested ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER.

A powerful cooler immediately catches your eye. So powerful that the video card is 305 mm long and 130 mm wide. In this case, the video card will occupy, in fact, three slots in the case — this means that two downstream ports of the motherboard will be blocked.

If you take a closer look, you will notice that the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT shroud is designed in such a way as to create a minimum of obstacles for airflow on the way through the main radiator. The printed circuit board and the radiator of the cooling system are blown by three 88 mm fans. The impellers, called Axial-tech, are distinguished by the special shape of the blades and the presence of a closed ring at the edges. According to the manufacturer, this form of «Carlsons» allows you to increase the air flow and reduce noise at high speeds. And it significantly increases the rigidity of the plastic blades.

The reverse side of the PCB is hidden behind a metal backplate. The video card is massive, so the plate plays not only a decorative role: it increases the rigidity of the structure and is involved in cooling the elements of the accelerator, since the backplate is in contact with the PCB near the GPU and memory chips with the help of thermal pads.
As for decorative elements, in such video cards the ROG logo located on the reverse side and holes in the cooling system cover on the front side are traditionally highlighted. The backlight is capable of reproducing 16.8 million colors, and you can configure it in the Aura Sync program. If desired, it can be turned off completely — there is a corresponding button on the board for this.

I note that next to this button there is a switch between the BIOS firmware of the video card. By default, it is enabled in P — Performance mode: the video card runs at maximum frequency to achieve the highest FPS in games. Q (Quiet) mode keeps the same GPU and memory settings, but makes the cooler quieter, sacrificing cooling of the graphics adapter elements.

The set of I / O interfaces has one HDMI port and three DisplayPorts. It is noteworthy that on the other side of the video card there are blocks for connecting two 4-pin fans, as well as a block for connecting an RGB tape. For example, you can connect the front case impellers to these connectors — and configure them so that their rotational speed increases as the GPU temperature rises.

The cooler’s radiator has six heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm. It comes into contact with the GPU through a nickel-plated copper sole, polished to a mirror finish. With the help of a thermal pad, it is also connected to the elements of the power converter. But the memory chips are cooled by a separate metal plate.

The printed circuit board is also striking in its power: 11 phases are responsible for powering the GPU, 3 more phases are for VRAM. For comparison: the reference Radeon RX 5700 XT has 7+1 phases. The processor power is controlled by the International Rectifier IR35217 PWM controller, and the memory power is controlled by the International Rectifier IR3567B. ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT involves connecting two PCI-E 6 + 2 slots.
8 GB of on-board memory is made up of eight Micron 9JA77 D9WCW chips. Video memory operates at an effective frequency of 14,000 MHz.

Gaming performance was measured using the well-known FRAPS program. It allows you to get the rendering time of each frame. Then, using the FRAFS Bench Viewer utility, not only the average FPS was calculated, but also the 99th percentile. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the minimum frames per second is due to the desire to clean up the results from random bursts of performance that were provoked by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.
During testing, the ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC was further overclocked to stable core and memory frequencies. The graphs show the Boost frequencies of the video cards used, as well as the actual memory frequency.
⇡ # Cooling system efficiency, noise level, power consumption and overclocking
The ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC fans will only spin when the GPU temperature reaches 50 degrees Celsius. The rotational speed grows quite smoothly — without a sharp, unpleasant and noticeable increase in the noise level to the ear.

ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC Key Performance Monitoring
In the default mode, after a short time, the impellers reach a certain limit and begin to rotate stably at a frequency of ~ 1650 rpm — this is 34% of the maximum possible frequency. It is impossible to call the work of the video card noisy: at a distance of 30 cm from the test bench, the measuring device recorded a reading of 39.7 dBA. At the same time, the GPU heated up to only 72 degrees Celsius. There is a decent margin: we can independently configure the operation of the cooling system in such a way that the temperature of the GPU does not exceed, for example, 70 degrees Celsius, but at the same time, the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC would work just as quietly under load.

ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC key performance monitoring (max fan speed)
I did so. It was worth raising the speed of the impellers to 37% (~ 1900 rpm), as the temperature of the graphics chip dropped sharply — to 64 degrees Celsius. Noise levels have increased to a still comfortable 40.7 dBA.
If you spin the fans to the maximum (3300 rpm), then the GPU temperature drops to 57 degrees Celsius at a noise level (when measured from the same point) of 50.8 dBA. As you can see, the three-fan cooling system, together with MaxContact technology and an enlarged radiator, works very efficiently.

ASUS ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC key performance monitoring (overclocking)
The frequency of the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC graphics chip in game mode varies from 1937 to 2003 MHz — these figures were recorded after a two-hour launch in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Naturally, the frequency of the GPU and memory can be slightly increased.
The video card driver, as well as related programs, allow you to increase the GPU frequency in Boost mode to 2150 MHz, and the memory frequency to 950 (15,200) MHz. Interestingly, the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC fired up easily with these presets. At the same time, in The Witcher, the processor frequency began to change in the range of 2086-2128 MHz. The fans of the video card now spin up more — up to 2000 rpm, the noise level has increased (up to 41 dBA), but the temperatures of the GPU and VRM have not increased — 72 and 77 degrees Celsius, respectively. Except that the memory temperature increased from 74 to 76 degrees Celsius, and the maximum power consumption of the stand rose from 295 to 335 watts.
From the article “Aggressive overclocking and undervolting Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT: how to do it and whether to do it”, we know that the frames indicated by AMD can be changed. To do this, just download the appropriate registry keys or use the MorePowerTool program.
Interestingly, «dancing» with reg-files had no effect. Micron memory already at 1000 MHz contributed to the appearance of artifacts on the screen. A small increase in the VCore voltage (from 1.2 to 1.225 V) made it possible to slightly increase the core frequency — up to 2143 MHz, but the video card again behaved unstable in some games. Therefore, it was decided to leave the previous, completely stable result.
3DMark, Graphics score, points
2010/1750 MHz | 2150/1900 MHz | Growth, %
time spy | 8858 | 9350 | 6 |
In 3DMark Time Spy, this overclocking resulted in a 6% increase in points. The increase was meagre. It can be seen that the manufacturer has already squeezed out almost everything from the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC. A similar picture was observed when we tested the ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER model (in the case of this video card, overclocking by non-extreme methods also gives a 6-7% increase in “parrots”). However, in some games, there is a more noticeable increase in FPS.
⇡ # Performance in games
Comparing the Radeon RX 5700 XT with the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER was prompted by several points at once. First, in the article “AMD Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT Video Card Review: Finally Done!” the reference sample, based on the Navi 10 XT chip, is faster than the GeForce RTX 2060 by an average of 21% and is also ahead of the GeForce RTX 2070 by 3%. We have already found out that the ASUS model is a very fast modification of the Radeon RX 5700 XT, so it is obvious that the hero of today’s test will break away from the listed NVIDIA accelerators even more.
Secondly, in our permanent Computer of the Month column, it is the Radeon RX 5700 XT and GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER that are offered as the basis for an advanced assembly — a $1020 system unit. So, in the article “Computer of the month. Special Issue: Assembling a $1000 Gaming PC (Autumn-Winter 2019)” we have already compared these video cards, including using them on various computer platforms. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that, for example, the Core i7-9700 + Radeon RX 5700 XT combination in Full HD resolution showed almost the same results as the Ryzen 7 3700X + GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER configuration. What does it say? For example, if you are absolutely not interested in playing games using DXR technology, but at the same time there is a desire to build a PC based on Ryzen chips, then, in general, there is not much point in overpaying for the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER. At higher resolutions, of course, the difference between the above assemblies will be noticeable.
In fact, this is precisely why when testing a video card, it is important to use the most powerful components in order to determine exactly the performance level of the graphics adapter, and not, say, the central processor. We know that the 8-core Core i9-9900K is considered the fastest gaming chip today — and we use it.
Yes, the focal resolution for the Radeon RX 5700 XT is WQHD. Here the video card feels very comfortable and gives excellent FPS in all games — even with anti-aliasing and maximum (or close to that) graphics quality settings. Still, let’s compare the performance of the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC and DUAL-RTX2070S-O8G-EVO at Ultra HD resolution, as it is less CPU dependent.
If you carefully read the article «Overview of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER and GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER», you will see that in Ultra HD resolution, the reference version of the Radeon RX 5700 XT was slightly faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition in only two cases out of twelve or equal to her. In our confrontation, when comparing ASUS models, the situation turned out to be much more complicated. So, ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC is only 6% behind ASUS DUAL-RTX2070S-O8G-EVO. If we take into account the additional overclocking of the hero of today’s review, then it is quite possible to put an equal sign between these video cards. Yes, there are games where the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is faster by 2-3 frames per second, but all this, by and large, is trifles. In addition, in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the overclocked ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC was even able to bypass the ASUS DUAL-RTX2070S-O8G-EVO. This, if we use the reference model Radeon RX 5700 XT, we could not achieve. Of course, ASUS DUAL-RTX2070S-O8G-EVO can also be overclocked and get the same 5-6% increase in frame rate in games, but here, in my opinion, the very fact that the AMD accelerator catches up and in isolated cases overtakes the competitor is noteworthy. Perhaps, over time, the situation for the «Reds» will improve a little more.

⇡#Conclusions
Several articles have already been published on our site, which in one way or another affect the performance and prospects of the Radeon RX 5700 XT. More than three months have passed since the release, and now we can say with confidence that AMD has turned out to be a very good video card that harmoniously fits into the existing lineup of gaming devices. Until now, among the players there are a fairly large number of people who do not see the point in ray tracing, or, more precisely, do not see any significant margin of safety in the existing family of GeForce RTX accelerators. Therefore, buying a graphics card such as the Radeon RX 5700 XT is a good alternative, because it allows you to save a lot.
And yet, in the case of the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC, the situation is different. The ASUS video card belongs to the premium segment, and therefore, in terms of cost, it competes with many GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER models sold by us. And we see that the hero of the review either loses a little to a competitor, or demonstrates similar results. Therefore, I dare to assume that the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC will be chosen mainly by ardent fans of both AMD and the Republic of Gamers series. If we put aside the talk about the price of the ROG STRIX Radeon RX 5700 XT OC, then this is the most magnificent modification of the Radeon RX 5700 XT: fast, quiet and very cold. For this device, and receives the award «Hardcore».
