The arrival of the GeForce RTX 2060 at the beginning of January rocked the consumer graphics market. Prior to the announcement of the entry-level GeForce 20 family, the public outside of NVIDIA’s plans could only wonder if the green team would want to bring Turing’s key innovations — real-time ray tracing and machine learning data processing — to mid-range devices, or A ticket to the future of 3D rendering will cost at least $499 until the next generation of GPUs matures.

As a result, NVIDIA agreed to democratize the RTX abbreviation, but this is not all that the GeForce RTX 2060 is good for. Among the accelerators of the GeForce 20 series, it is the younger model that has the best performance per dollar, and most importantly, its gaming performance without ray tracing is noticeably higher than that of the video card of the previous generation (GeForce GTX 1070), the price niche of which she had to occupy. Neither the GeForce RTX 2080, nor even the RTX 2070 can boast of this.

However, with a reference board price of $349 (or 31,990 rubles), the RTX 2060 can hardly be called a truly massive offer. The novelty has a lot of shareware versions that support the prices recommended by NVIDIA, but other devices make it clear that the times of the GeForce GTX 960 and GTX 1060 can no longer be returned. The ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 is a good example of what a mid-range graphics card is all about in the RTX On era.

⇡#Specifications, scope of delivery, price

ASUS offers three options for the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060. The simplest modification of the video card corresponds to the RTX 2060 reference specifications: the base frequency of the GPU is 1365 MHz and the Boost Clock is 1680 MHz (recall that Boost Clock refers to the average frequency under typical load, and in most tasks auto-acceleration is more aggressive). ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 with the OC index is characterized by frequencies of 1365/1830 MHz. There is also an intermediate version, Advanced Edition, with Boost Clock at 1710 MHz.

All ASUS ROG Strix video cards have a guaranteed overclocking mode, which is activated in the proprietary GPU Tweak II program. In three modifications of the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060, this option raises the base frequency to 1396 MHz (although this does not matter for games) and increases the Boost Clock by 70 MHz.

NVIDIA is known to sort Turing family chips according to their clock speed potential before shipping them to finished device manufacturers. This also applies to the TU106 GPU, which underlies the GeForce RTX 2060 and RTX 2070, but judging by the accelerators that have passed through our hands, it is not yet clear whether this practice extends to the lower model of the GeForce 20 series. If yes, it is likely that the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 in the most affordable modification does not overclock as well as the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC.

However, this is not easy to verify: as has happened more than once with ASUS products, the basic models of ROG Strix video cards are not available for sale. There is not even an Advanced Edition in Russian online stores yet, but this is not too big a loss, since at the price on foreign sites the gap between it and the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC is minimal, and the technical specifications differ quite significantly. As for the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 in the «top» configuration, compared to the recommended price of the RTX 2060 ($349), which the Founders Edition adheres to in the NVIDIA online store, the ASUS offer will cost $70 more.

In Russia, the prices of the RTX 2060 have dropped significantly since the first boxes with the new product appeared on the price lists. So, some devices are already available at a price of 27 thousand rubles, befitting a mid-range video card. ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC costs almost 10 thousand rubles. more. Let’s see what the gamer gets for this money. To begin with, let’s just list it: the video card itself, a paper user manual, a software disk and several useful accessories (cable ties with Velcro and an adapter from two six-pin power connectors to one eight-pin).

Design

From the outside, the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 is indistinguishable from the ASUS GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card we tested recently. The design of both these accelerators have a lot in common with past-generation ASUS devices based on the GeForce GTX 1070, 1080 and 1080 Ti. The angular design of the graphics card case has not changed much, and the familiar glow of RGB LEDs penetrates through the slots of the front panel and the metal plate on the back of the PCB. With the help of the Aura Sync utility, the user can choose the shade, the backlight mode and synchronize it with the lights of the ASUS motherboard. In addition, the printed circuit board has a connector for powering the LED strip and a button that turns off all illumination at once.

The cooling system of the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 uses three 90mm fans — impellers of the same size and design were first used by ASUS in devices of the GeForce 10 series. cannot be disassembled for preventive cleaning.

Higher models of the ASUS GeForce 10 series had the fans stop when the GPU temperature was below 55°C, but in the GeForce 20 family this feature is hidden in a UEFI backup that is activated by the flick of a switch on the board of the circuit board. Otherwise, the air flow never stops. Two case fans can be connected to the video card via connectors on the short side of the PCB, the speed of which will automatically change depending on the temperature of the GPU.

Despite the external similarity of the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 cooling system with coolers of the previous generation, there are several features in the internal structure of the novelty. ASUS abandoned the technology of direct contact of heat pipes with the GPU die after the GeForce GTX 1070/1080. Like the GTX 1080 Ti and later the GTX 1070 Ti, the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060’s main heatsink consists of two sections of fins connected by heat pipes (six in this case), and in the center the pipes are sandwiched in a sandwich of two anodized copper plates. The surface of the plate facing the GPU chip is polished to a mirror finish.

To remove heat from the field-effect transistors of the voltage regulator, a protrusion is provided in the radiator, pasted over with a thick thermal pad. The rest of the PCB components that require active cooling (primarily GDDR6 memory chips) are covered with a separate aluminum frame — in the ROG Strix devices of the GeForce 20 series, it has turned from a flat sheet of metal, which was content with past generation graphics cards, into a full-fledged additional heatsink.

If the rules for labeling older GPUs of the Turing family also apply to the “cut” TU106, in the OC version of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 we got a GPU of the highest category: the chip engraving contains the letter A in the second block of characters (TU106-200A-KA-A1) . The RAM chips marked 8TA77 D9WCW are manufactured by Micron and have a bandwidth of 14 Gb/s per bus pin.

The reference version of the GeForce RTX 2060 (Founders Edition) made it clear that the reduced clock speeds and simplified configuration of the computing units in the younger version of the TU106 chip are no reason to save on a VRM device. The ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 voltage regulator, like on the RTX 2070 board of the same brand, includes ten phases for powering the GPU and two for RAM chips. All Turing-based graphics cards use integrated-driver field-effect transistors (DrMOS) to accurately control the voltage and send the signal to the PWM controller via the IMON signal. The uP9512 chip from uPI Semiconductor gives the VRM of GeForce 20 series accelerators another advantage — the ability to turn off several power phases at low load.

We have already noticed that the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 board has a redundant UEFI chip soldered. But all the differences in the additional firmware come down to a lower fan speed in the middle temperature range and a passive cooling function when the GPU does not heat up above 55 ° C.

A protective plate cutout on the back of the PCB provides access to the block of contact holes for monitoring and controlling the supply voltage of the GPU, RAM and PLL. However, not everything is so simple: without dismantling the cooler and minor modifications to the printed circuit board, you can only measure, but not adjust these parameters.

And finally, a few words about external interfaces. NVIDIA decided to keep the DVI-D connector in the reference GeForce RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 models — all the same, graphics cards of this level are not designed for games in 4K mode, and signal transmission at a lower resolution is quite within the power of the outdated standard. ASUS thinks otherwise, and as a result, the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 has two HDMI outputs, two DisplayPort, and no DVI. Gone is the USB 3.1 Gen 2 port found on all Founders Edition boards, including the RTX 2060.

We measure the power of video cards separately from the CPU and other PC components. For this, a PCI Express x16 hard riser is used, in which the +12 V and ground lines coming from the motherboard are broken and brought to a separate six-pin power connector. The Corsair AX1200i power supply unit, using the Corsair LINK 4 utility, allows you to register the total current passing through the auxiliary power connectors of the video card and the riser, with a period of 1 s, and the power is calculated by multiplying the current value by the voltage value of 12 V at each point in time.

As a test load, FurMark is used with the most aggressive settings (3840 × 2160 resolution, MSAA 8x) and Crysis 3 (maximum graphics quality, 3840 × 2160 resolution, MSAA 4x). Power measurements are taken after the graphics card has warmed up, when the GPU temperature and clock speeds have stabilized. Also during the test using MSI Afterburner software, we register a number of other variables: clock speed, voltage and temperature of the GPU, rotational speed of the cooling fans.

Note: in the specifications of Vega, as the highest frequency, AMD indicates not the maximum allowable at standard settings, as was the case in previous generations of the GCN architecture, but the upper limit of the range in which the GPU operates under a typical load. But since monitoring and overclocking utilities, including the proprietary WattMan, ignore the Boost Clock and still show the maximum frequency, it is indicated on the diagrams.

⇡#Clock speeds, power consumption, temperature, overclocking

Factory overclocking guarantees the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC higher clock speeds than the GeForce RTX 2060 Founders Edition, which is also not the easiest and cheapest version of the RTX 2060. Judging by the Boost Clock table values ​​u200bu200b(average GPU frequency in typical tasks) , then the ASUS graphics card outperforms the reference RTX 2060 by 150 MHz, but under continuous load the difference is not so great — only 120 MHz. However, to overclock the GPU, the manufacturer had to significantly increase the supply voltage. As a result, the power of the device in the gaming test is 14 W higher than that of the GeForce RTX 2060 FE.

Thanks to the cooling system adopted by the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC from its sister model based on the full-featured TU106 chip (ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070), its GPU temperatures under load are as much as 18°C ​​cooler compared to Founders Edition values. Note that our sample video cards arrived at the 3DNews laboratory after tests in another publication, and just in case, we changed the thermal paste to Arctic Cooling MX-2. Perhaps the «native» thermal interface Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC is not that good.

According to measurements in FurMark, it can be seen that the OC modifications of the GeForce RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 from the ROG Strix series have exactly the same power reserve (171-174 W). But in games, the RTX 2060 requires 25 watts less than the RTX 2070, which means that with further overclocking of the video card, the power system will definitely not become a limiting factor.

MSI Afterburner and similar software already have the GeForce RTX 2060 VoltMod feature, but the overclocker’s only tools when overclocking Turing chips in most cases are the clock curve and the power reserve slider, since the GPU Boost algorithms ignore the manipulation of the voltage slider. Our copy of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC allowed us to shift the base frequency of the GPU by 100 MHz up (and with it the entire frequency-voltage curve), and the stable frequency under load increased by 120 MHz. It is noteworthy that overclocking did not affect the supply voltage of the GPU in any way — it is quite high even in normal mode.

Although the power consumption of the video card in the gaming test has changed to 19 W, it is not necessary to touch the power slider for overclocking — the full reserve is still not exhausted. However, the UEFI of the video card allows you to increase the nominal power by 25%, and this is clearly visible in FurMark. Due to the fans operating at maximum speed, the temperature of the overclocked GPU can be reduced by 7-13 ° C compared to normal heating, but for everyday use, the automation of the cooling system can also be left alone: ​​overclocking has almost no effect on temperature or at fan speed.

On graphics cards of the Turing family, the RAM overclocks much better than the GPU. Most of the samples that have passed through our hands, including the GeForce RTX 2060 Founders Edition, allow you to increase the speed of GDDR6 chips from the stock value of 14 to 16 Gb / s per pin. In the case of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC, I had to limit myself to 15.6 Gb / s, but this is also a generous increase in the bandwidth of the relatively narrow 192-bit memory bus of the GeForce RTX 2060.

In the aggregate of synthetic benchmarks, factory overclocking increased the results of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC by only 4% compared to the reference video card. The latter exactly matches the performance of the GTX 1070 Ti, as well as the Radeon RX Vega 56, but the increased frequencies of the ASUS board allowed the RTX 2060 to break the bill.

However, under the average results in 3DMark, there is a big difference between the tests in Direct3D 11 and Direct3D 12. In benchmarks with the old programming interface, the GTX 1070 Ti and Vega 64 are at least as good as the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC, and at a high screen resolution they are already significantly faster. Under Direct3D 12, the opposite is true — it seems that the Turing architecture has finally overcome the bad reputation of NVIDIA chips in the context of the new API.

The most advantageous for the GeForce RTX 2060 is the comparison with the GeForce GTX 1060: the ASUS board is 62% ahead of its predecessor.

Overclocking the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC GPU in manual mode leaves much to be desired, but the simultaneous increase in memory bandwidth significantly affected the 3DMark verdict (8% on average). But the GeForce RTX 2070, also in the ROG Strix OC modification, is still out of reach for the RTX 2060: overclocking only reduced the distance from 23 to 14%.

⇡#Game tests (1920×1080, 2560×1440)

Most gaming tests respond poorly to the increased frequencies of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC: the average difference in frame rate between the ASUS card and the reference version of the GeForce RTX 2060 is 5%. But there are games that behave differently: for example, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p, the factory overclocking of ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC provided an advantage of 11%.

At 1080p and 1440p, the GeForce RTX 2060 and GeForce GTX 1070 Ti are almost equal in terms of average performance, although individual games lean in favor of one or another video card. Factory overclocking allowed ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC to secure the lead with an average margin of 4%.

The Radeon RX Vega 56 doesn’t perform at its full potential at screen resolutions below 4K, and as a result, the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC was 11% faster. However, if we do not consider the results in three games that are especially poorly combined with the GCN architecture (GTA V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3), then the distance between Vega 56 and the new ASUS is reduced to 6-7%.

GeForce GTX 1060 and ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC share an abyss of 54-60% frame rates, but the GeForce RTX 2070 is not as far ahead of its younger relative as it was in the «synthetics»: by 13% in 1080p mode and at 18 % at 1440p.

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC custom overclocking is less productive in games than in 3DMark: the GPU frequency went beyond 2 GHz, and the performance changed only by 6-7% compared to the results in normal mode.

⇡#Game tests (3840×2160)

The GeForce RTX 2060, and by and large the RTX 2070 too, don’t handle games well at 4K resolution. Contrary to the obvious assumption, 6 GB of RAM is enough for now, but the TU106 GPU itself does not pull such a high computational load. Among the eleven games, only Battlefield 1 and DOOM run on the RTX 2060 at 4K at 60 FPS and above, and without resource-intensive full-screen anti-aliasing modes.

But in comparative testing, it is 4K that clearly demonstrates the difference between GPUs and the impact on performance of the key parameters of a video card — GPU frequency, amount and bandwidth of RAM. So, the benefit from the factory overclocking of ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC is 7% according to the average results, and the advantage of the new ASUS over the GeForce GTX 1060 reached 67%.

At the same time, the distance between the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC and a similar board based on the RTX 2070 has increased to 19%.

Powerful graphic cards of the past generation lose ground compared to the younger Turing when moving to 2160p mode: thanks to fast memory, large GPU caches and other architectural innovations from NVIDIA, the ASUS device outperforms the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and Vega 56 by 7 and 10%, respectively.

Due to the overclocking of the graphics core and RAM, the performance of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 OC in 4K was increased by another 8%. But in this case, it is interesting to compare the overclocked ROG Strix with the GeForce RTX 2060 Founders Edition card operating in normal mode: the difference of 240 MHz in GPU frequency and 1600 Gb / s in RAM speed sometimes brings 18-24% frame rate. It’s a pity that in games that are especially sensitive to overclocking (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Tom Clancy’s The Division), at a resolution of 2160p, the frame rate of 60 FPS still does not shine for video cards of this class.

The close relationship of the GeForce RTX 2060, the most affordable model of the GeForce 20 family, with the RTX 2070 gave graphics card manufacturers the opportunity to instantly saturate the market with devices on the same printed circuit boards and with the same cooling systems — just remove a couple of RAM chips. And if in the GeForce 10 series on Pascal chips, a mid-level card relied on a separate chip, then in the 20th series, NVIDIA did not find a separate Turing architecture GPU for an accelerator of this price category, and therefore the GeForce RTX 2060 turned out to be more expensive than its predecessor, the GeForce GTX 1060, consumes more energy and requires more serious cooling.

But in other respects, NVIDIA’s conditionally mass offer only won. Not only is the RTX 2060 more than 1.5 times faster than the GTX 1060 in terms of gaming performance, the engineering that NVIDIA partners used on the GeForce RTX 2070 graphics cards made the RTX 2060 a notoriously higher quality product than most GTX 1060 implementations.

Let’s look at the hero of this review. The manufacturer gave the new model the printed circuit board and cooling system of the GeForce RTX 2070 without the slightest change, except for the loss of the USB 3.1 Gen 2 port. three impellers, RGB lighting, the ability to connect case fans and LED strips. And thanks to the massive CO heatsink and the high power reserve of the voltage regulator, overclocking this video card comes down to a simple increase in clock frequencies — nothing else needs to be touched.

The ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 in the OC Edition configuration we tested has rivals almost $100 less, because the basic version of this model is not found on sale. At the same time, other variants of the GeForce RTX 2070 already cost almost the same as the ROG Strix-branded RTX 2060. But what is more important — savings or quality, it is up to the buyers to decide, as always.
