It’s been nearly half a year since NVIDIA introduced the Turing-based triad of consumer devices, the GeForce RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti. With custom logic that NVIDIA engineers have integrated into the GPU die, for the first time in 3D graphics history, a single GPU is capable of real-time ray tracing rendering. An equally important innovation was the DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) algorithm, due to which game developers cooperating with NVIDIA can increase the rendering resolution almost free of charge in terms of performance and without visible loss of quality.
But until the arrival of the GeForce RTX 2060, the revolutionary features of the Turing chips were reserved for devices priced at $499 and up. Also, in games that don’t use Ray Tracing and DLSS, the early RTX-branded models didn’t deliver the performance boosts that have accompanied GPU generations in the past, especially when moving to new technology norms. In this regard, the GeForce RTX 2060 compares favorably with its counterparts: the performance margin of the younger model of the GeForce RTX 20 series is half as high as its formal predecessor, the GeForce GTX 1060.

The price of the GeForce RTX 2060, like the older models on Turing chips, includes an «RTX tax». The new product was released at a price of $349: among the GeForce 10 generation video cards, the GTX 1070 Ti costs so much, and the GTX 1060 at the time of the announcement was $100 cheaper. And yet, the GeForce RTX 2060 is the most affordable opportunity to see real-time ray tracing on your own monitor screen today, and the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G, in turn, is one of the most inexpensive modifications of the RTX 2060 in the products of NVIDIA partners.
⇡#Specifications, scope of delivery, price
In the GIGABYTE catalog, the GAMING brand stands for mid-range graphics cards. In addition to this series, among the various modifications of the GeForce RTX 2060, GIGABYTE has the “premium” AORUS XTREME model, the budget WINDFORCE with a simplified cooling system, and the GeForce RTX 2060 MINI ITX accelerator in a form factor for compact PCs. In turn, GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 GAMING exists in two versions — OC and OC PRO.
The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G graphics card that we’re reviewing today boasts a Boost Clock of 1830 MHz, which is significantly higher than the reference GeForce RTX 2060 (Founders Edition) rated at 1630 MHz. The OC PRO variant does not differ from the base model in the scale of factory overclocking, but it is equipped with a more powerful cooling system — what exactly is the difference, we will discuss later. GDDR6 RAM is not overclocked in either of the two modifications and operates with a nominal bandwidth of 14 Gb / s per bit of the RAM bus.

The recommended retail price for the GeForce RTX 2060 is $349, which is exactly the price of the RTX 2060 Founders Edition, which NVIDIA sells through its own online store, and among products from other manufacturers, only a video card with a simplified cooling system, including models of the Mini ITX form factor, can be bought for this amount. . On US marketplaces, the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G isn’t far off the rock bottom (average $380), but it still compares favorably with the most refined GeForce RTX 2060 modifications, some of which are asking for $100 more. But in Russian online stores it is difficult to find a more affordable option: even the Founders Edition directly from NVIDIA will cost more than the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G.
The software disc and paper documentation are all included with the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G besides the graphics card itself.
Design
We are already familiar with the GIGABYTE GAMING graphics device thanks to the similar model GeForce RTX 2080, but while the RTX 2080 is equipped with a large cooling system and occupies 2.5 expansion slots in the PC case, the RTX 2060 does not go beyond two slots. The video card lacks such a spectacular LED illumination as the analogs from the AORUS series. In the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G case, all RGB LEDs are concentrated under the company logo on the side surface (the hue and backlight mode are configured in the proprietary AORUS Engine software).

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G is cooled by three 82mm impellers. In order to reduce the turbulence of the air flow, the fan assembly is designed so that the central one rotates in the opposite direction with respect to the two side ones. When the GPU load is low, the fans are suspended.

The radiator of the cooling system also makes the video card related to the older models of the GAMING family: heat pipes that connect three sections of aluminum fins together are flattened in the middle and directly contact the GPU chip. The rest of the PCB components that need active cooling (RAM chips, FETs, chokes, and even voltage regulator capacitors) are pressed against separate plates at the base of the heatsink. But, unlike the GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G, the GeForce RTX 2060 heatsink is smaller in height and contains four instead of six heat pipes. Moreover, according to the information on the GIGABYTE website, only the PRO version of this model has four tubes, and the usual GAMING OC costs two. Judging by the markings, it was the latter that was sent to us for testing, but there are obviously four tubes in it. Somewhere there was definitely some kind of confusion — most likely, when the characteristics of new models were published on the GIGABYTE website.
The back surface of the PCB is covered with a thin aluminum plate. Unlike most other video cards that we dealt with, in this case, the shield is needed not only for beauty and protection of PCB components, but also for PCB cooling with the help of several thermal pads.

⇡#Printed circuit board
The voltage regulator on the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G board includes components for six GPU power phases and two RAM chips. The circuits of two more phases are separated on the PCB, but the seats are empty. The full version of VRM is used in the sister model GeForce RTX 2070, but since the TU106 chip in the RTX 2060 has a lower power consumption, a 6 + 2 scheme is enough for it.
The power system of all video cards based on Turing chips allows you to dynamically adjust the number of active GPU power phases in order to maintain high efficiency over the entire range of power consumption. This is made possible thanks to the uPI uP9512 PWM controller and DrMOS (Integrated Driver Field Effect Transistor) chips, which allow precise monitoring of the transistor drain voltage on the IMON signal. By the way, there are no electrolytic capacitors on the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G board, only solid-state components — the manufacturer decided not to save on the power system.
All 20-series reference graphics cards are equipped with a USB Type-C port that can be used to connect any peripherals to a PC, including VR headsets with DisplayLink interface. It is unlikely that an accelerator of such a performance class as the GeForce RTX 2060 is suitable for exploring virtual reality, I decided GIGABYTE and deprived the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G of this opportunity. Unfortunately, instead of USB Type-C, another DisplayPort or HDMI connector did not appear, and there is no DVI-D port, which is on the GeForce GTX 2060 Founders Edition board.

We measure the power of video cards separately from the CPU and other PC components. For this, a PCI Express x16 hard riser is used, in which the +12 V and ground lines coming from the motherboard are broken and brought to a separate six-pin power connector. The Corsair AX1200i power supply unit, using the Corsair LINK 4 utility, allows you to register the total current passing through the auxiliary power connectors of the video card and the riser, with a period of 1 s, and the power is calculated by multiplying the current value by the voltage value of 12 V at each point in time.
As a test load, FurMark is used with the most aggressive settings (3840 × 2160 resolution, MSAA 8x) and Crysis 3 (maximum graphics quality, 3840 × 2160 resolution, MSAA 4x). Power measurements are taken after the graphics card has warmed up, when the GPU temperature and clock speeds have stabilized. Also during the test, we use the MSI Afterburner software to register a number of other variables: clock speed, supply voltage and temperature of the GPU, rotational speed of the cooling fans.
⇡#Test participants
The following video cards took part in performance testing:
Note: in the specifications of Vega, as the highest frequency, AMD indicates not the maximum allowable at standard settings, as was the case in previous generations of the GCN architecture, but the upper limit of the range in which the GPU operates under a typical load. But since utilities for monitoring and overclocking, including the proprietary WattMan, ignore the Boost Clock and still show the maximum frequency, it is indicated on the diagrams.
⇡#Clock speeds, power consumption, temperature, overclocking
With factory overclocking, the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G GPU maintains a higher frequency in the gaming test compared to the RTX 2060 Founders Edition, even if the difference under continuous load does not exceed 105 MHz. Since overclocking software is not yet able to detect GPU voltage on GeForce RTX 2060 boards, we do not know if GIGABYTE had to increase this parameter along with clock speeds, but the power consumption of GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G is significantly higher than that of the reference model (on 27W in gaming test and 35W in FurMark).
Despite the increased power, the GIGABYTE graphics card cools better: compared to Founders Edition the temperature of the GPU under load is 8-10 ° C lower, although the fan speed is about the same — a larger radiator makes itself felt. By the way, the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G does not report data from two separate tachometers, like the Founders Edition and third-party video cards based on the older chips of the Turing family, which means that the rotation speed of the impellers is also regulated jointly.

The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G GPU is pre-overclocked, and the video card itself, by all indications, does not belong to the “premium” class, so it will not be possible to significantly increase its frequencies above the standard values. However, the UEFI settings allow you to expand the power reserve by 13%, and this was enough to shift the base frequency of the GPU by 60 MHz. After that, the core frequency under load increased by 75 MHz and reached 2025 MHz. Despite less efficient cooling, our sample GeForce RTX 2060 Founders Edition still overclocks a little better (15 MHz difference in GPU frequency under load), although in the zone above 2 GHz this is a negligible difference.
Overclocking GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G did not work, but the power of the device increased by only 9-10 watts. There is no special need to run the cooling system at full speed in such a situation, although in this way you can reduce the GPU temperature by another 8–10 °C.
The RAM on the GeForce RTX 20 family of graphics cards overclocks superbly, and the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G is no exception: chips designed for a bandwidth of 14 Gb / s work stably here at 16 Gb / s.
⇡#Performance: 3DMark
In the «synthetics», the factory overclocking of the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G increased the performance of the TU106 chip by only 4% compared to the RTX 2060 Founders Edition. A further increase in operating parameters in manual mode proved to be more productive and led to an increase in results by another 7%. According to 3DMark, the GIGABYTE graphics card is more than one and a half times superior to its predecessor, the GeForce RTX 2060 from the GeForce 10 series (GTX 1060), and due to increased clock speeds GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G was able to break the tie with the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and the Radeon RX Vega 56.

⇡#Performance: gaming (1920×1080, 2560×1440)
Higher clocks give GIGABYTE a moderate frame rate advantage in 3-4%compared to the reference GeForce RTX 2060. And if we take the performance of the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G itself at stock settings as a starting point, then additional overclocking allows you to increase FPS by another 6-7%.
In the price niche occupied by the GeForce RTX 2060, the new NVIDIA has no equal rivals yet, and only a little overclocking is enough to secure its leadership in a collision with more expensive counterparts — GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and Radeon RX Vega 56.
The average difference between a GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G and a GeForce GTX 1060 running at reference frequencies is 53-57%. And if we compare the GeForce RTX 2060 with the RTX 2070, then at a screen resolution of 1080p, the losses in the set of functional blocks and memory bandwidth that the TU106 chip suffered are compensated by processor dependence and lack of parallelism in the computing load: the older model is only 15% superior to the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G, but in 1440p mode the gap increases to 20%.

⇡#Performance: gaming (3840×2160)
At 4K resolution, all sources of GPU processing power (number of processing units, memory bus bandwidth and clock speeds) are used the most. In normal mode, the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G is already 5% faster than the reference graphics card in average frame rates, and additional overclocking increases the performance of the GIGABYTE board by another 8%.
The GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G compares favorably against the GeForce GTX 1060 (64% average difference) and still outperforms the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti along with the Radeon RX Vega 56, but the gap between the two TU106-based accelerators (RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 ) reached 21%.

⇡#findings
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G is one of the most affordable modifications of the junior accelerator of the GeForce RTX 20 series. Suffice it to say that in Russian retail it costs less than the RTX 2060 Founders Edition from the NVIDIA online store. In order to reduce the price of the device so much, the manufacturer has eliminated a number of optional features that are typical for “premium” models. There is no abundant LED backlighting, the ability to connect case fans and LED strips. Even the USB Type-C connector with DisplayLink interface, which is on the Founders Edition boards, had to be sacrificed.
But with the main tasks of the GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming OC PRO 6G, it does just as well: it has factory overclocking, and a power reserve and a cooling system with three fans allow you to squeeze the rest of the performance out of the TU106 chip and thereby significantly increase the frame rate in games compared to the results of the reference video card.
