MSI P65 Creator 9SF belongs to the class of NVIDIA RTX Studio Laptops, so in the introduction to this article I will talk a little about what it is. In short, these are laptops that are designed for users who create content. These mobile computers use only powerful components, including GeForce RTX and Quadro RTX graphics, as well as 6- and 8-core Intel processors. At the same time, such laptops must have at least 16 GB of RAM and a fast SSD with a capacity of at least 512 GB. In general, it is obvious that laptops belonging to the NVIDIA Studio class are very productive solutions optimized (due to drivers and special software) for various kinds of «creative» tasks. Working with graphics, video, photos, audio — it is believed that all these processes can handle such laptops as the MSI P65 Creator 9SF. This is what we will check today.

Perhaps the most sophisticated version of the P65 Creator 9SF has arrived at our test lab. On the motherboard of the laptop, in addition to the GeForce RTX 2070, an 8-core Core i9-9880H processor, 32 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, and two SSDs with a total capacity of 1 TB are installed. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, I did not find such a modification of the Creator for sale. I know that the model MSI P65 Creator 8SF-272RU (9S7-16Q412-272) with Core i7-8750H, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD and Full HD-display costs an average of $1620 in Moscow retail.

All MSI P65 Creator 9SF are equipped with the Intel Wireless-AC 9560, which supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac standards at 2.4GHz and 5GHz with a maximum throughput of up to 1.73Gbps and Bluetooth 5.

In addition, all MSI P65 Creator 9SF(E) comply with the military standard MIL-STD 810G.

Only an external power supply with a power of 230 W and a weight of about 600 g was included with the MSI laptop.

Separately, I note the pre-installed program Creator Center. It can be used to customize the system for specific work programs (Adobe, Autodesk components, and other applications optimized by NVIDIA as part of the Studio initiative). The utility allows you to select the operating mode of the cooling fans, and also allows you to adjust the brightness of the screen and other laptop components. Finally, with Creator Center, you can manage the built-in battery and monitor the temperature of the main components of the laptop.

⇡# Appearance and input devices

The laptop looks strict. On the cover of the MSI P65 Creator 9SF, there is an unobtrusive dragon logo, no illuminated elements, except for the keyboard and LED indicators, are provided. At the same time, the body of the laptop is completely made of metal.

The laptop lid opens 180 degrees. There are no complaints about the hinges used in the MSI P65 Creator 9SF: they are tight and clearly position the screen, but the lid can be opened even with one hand. The thickness of the laptop is 17.9 mm, and its weight does not exceed 2 kilograms. Yes, in 2019 we will not be surprised by such parameters, but still, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is rightfully considered a very compact work laptop. Taking such a computer with you everywhere should not be too difficult — even with a 600-gram power supply, which you also have to carry with you.

MSI P65 Creator 9SF has no interfaces on the front and back, they are located on the sides. A noticeable area is occupied by the perforation of the cooling system. The air heated by the cooler leaves the case and behind, and on the right, and on the left. In front, there is only a battery indicator.

On the left, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF has an Ethernet port, two USB 3.2 Gen2 A-type ports (the new name for USB 3.1 Gen2 and the USB 3.1 standard, respectively), and two 3.5mm mini-jacks for connecting a microphone and headphones. On the right are HDMI and mini-DisplayPort outputs, as well as Thunderbolt 3 compatible with USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C and another USB 3.2 Gen2 A type.

As you can see, almost everything you need to work is there. If necessary, multiple monitors can be connected to the MSI P65 Creator 9SF at once. It is correct that the laptop left the RJ-45 connector. But the lack of a card reader will definitely upset users involved in video editing and photography — it is very lacking here.

The keyboard of the review hero is very similar to the input device of the MSI PS42 8RB ultrabook, which we tested in 2018. A lot of things coincide: the size and location of the keys, the color of the backlight (white, three-level), tactile sensations. So, pressing the buttons on the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is clear and sonorous — typing (which I am currently doing) on such a keyboard is very convenient. Unless you need to get used to the location of the Home, PgUp, PgDn, End keys, collected in the far right column, for some time. Additional functions that are activated simultaneously with the Fn key “hang” on the same buttons. The latter, by the way, is located on the right — I think they did it on purpose to activate them with one hand.

Unlike the MSI PS42 8RB, today’s guest has black buttons, and therefore the white backlight looks very appropriate here and works well at any brightness level at any time of the day.

Again, unlike the MSI PS42 8RB, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF has a huge glass touchpad with a width of 14 cm. A fingerprint scanner is installed in the upper left corner of the touch panel. The touchpad supports Windows multi-touch gestures as well as handwriting.

Unfortunately, I can’t say anything good about the laptop’s webcam — the MSI P65 Creator 9SF has a tiny matrix that can record 720p video at a vertical frequency of 30 Hz. Image quality is, as you might guess, below average. For communication via Skype, it will do, for something more serious (for example, streaming) — no.

⇡ # Internal device and upgrade options

MSI P65 Creator 9SF is quite easy to disassemble: in order to remove the bottom of the laptop, you need to unscrew 14 screws — and that’s it.

It just doesn’t make any sense to do so. Unless for the sake of cleaning the fans from dust over time. The fact is that all the main components of the MSI P65 Creator 9SF, including the Cooler Boost Trinity + cooling system, are located on the back of the motherboard. That is, in order to replace the SSD and RAM, you will have to dismantle it. Of course, few will do this. Without these torments, only the wireless module can be replaced. It is possible, but not necessary.

An attentive reader noticed that the CPU-Z program did not detect the type of RAM installed in the MSI P65 Creator 9SF. At the same time, it is known that the RAM modules in the laptop are installed in SO-DIMM slots. Therefore, it is possible to increase the amount of RAM, but, as I said, you will have to remove the motherboard. Two SSDs are combined into a zero-level RAID array. Only after entering the BIOS of the device, it became clear that Samsung MZVLB512HAJQ with a capacity of 512 GB each is working in pairs.

And here is a moment for discussion. Obviously, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF configuration covered in this article does not need any upgrade in the next few years. It turns out that there is nothing wrong with the fact that the device is so arranged. However, on sale there are versions with 16 GB of RAM, as well as models with 512 GB of SSD. When working with the same video editing in 4K resolution, such capacities may not be enough. And what will we get? Not everyone will decide to increase the RAM on their own, the same applies to SSDs, because to install a second drive, you will have to almost completely disassemble the laptop. So, weigh the pros and cons carefully if you want to buy an MSI P65 Creator 9SF that is not the top configuration.

As for the cooling system, it uses three fans and six heat pipes at once. The manufacturer claims that the fan blades are only 0.2 mm thick. It’s very interesting to see how Cooler Boost Trinity+ will handle the cooling of an 8-core Core i9 and GeForce RTX 2070 (albeit in a Max-Q design). So let’s move on to the tests.

⇡ # Testing methodology

Since the laptop has one of the most productive graphics solutions, it makes sense to use only the maximum or close graphics quality settings. In addition, testing was carried out in Ultra HD resolution.

Gaming performance was measured using the well-known FRAPS program. With it, we get the rendering time of each frame. Then, using the FRAFS Bench Viewer utility, not only the average FPS is calculated, but also the 99th percentile. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the minimum frames per second is due to the desire to clean up the results from random bursts of performance that were provoked by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.

CPU and memory performance was measured using the following software:

  • Corona 1.3. Testing rendering speed using the renderer of the same name. Measures the build speed of the standard BTR scene used to measure performance.
  • WinRAR 5.40. Archiving a folder of 11 GB with various data in RAR5 format and with the maximum degree of compression.
  • Blender 2.79. Determination of the final rendering speed in one of the popular free packages for creating three-dimensional graphics. The duration of building the final model from Blender Cycles Benchmark rev4 is measured.
  • x265 HD Benchmark. Testing the speed of video transcoding to H.265/HEVC format.
  • CINEBENCH R15. Performance measurement of photorealistic 3D rendering in CINEMA 4D animation package, CPU test.
  • JetStream 1.1 and WebXPRT 3 (browser — Google Chrome). Performance testing of Internet applications built using HTML5 and JavaScript algorithms.
  • Adobe Premier Pro 2019. Project rendering in Ultra HD resolution.

Display testing is performed using the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter and the HCFR application.

The laptop battery life is checked in three modes. The first load option — web surfing — involves alternately opening and closing the tabs of the 3DNews.ru, Computeruniverse.ru and Unsplash.com sites with an interval of 30 seconds. This test uses the Google Chrome browser with the «Block data and cookies from third-party sites» and «Do not allow sites to save data» options enabled. In the second mode, x265 (HEVC) video is played in a standard Windows 10 player with the repeat function activated. The third type of load is running the Unigine Heaven benchmark at maximum graphics quality settings in full screen mode. In all three cases, the same display brightness was set to 200 cd / m2.

In games and other applications, the results of the following laptops are considered:

⇡ # Display and sound

If you buy the 4K version of the laptop, it will have an AU Optronics AUO41EB IPS panel equipped with a matte finish. The display on the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is great, and here’s why.

  Gamma
  Color gamut

  Colorful temperature

Colorful temperature

Firstly, the screen is bright — the maximum white luminosity is 421 cd / m2. This performance is more than enough if you want to work with the MSI P65 Creator 9SF outdoors in bright sunny weather or sit in a spacious office in front of a huge window. Minimum white luminosity is only 7 cd/m2. Secondly, the AU Optronics AUO41EB has a high contrast ratio of 1077:1. Watching movies and generally working with video together with the MSI P65 Creator 9SF turns out to be quite pleasant.

True Color software offers six display modes: gaming, anti-blue, sRGB, developer, office, and movies. Testing was carried out in the default mode — sRGB. In it, the display calibration was carried out at an average level. The color temperature is kept in the region of 7000-7500 K, while the stability of grayscale is at a good level. Gamma — 2.31 — is higher than the reference value of 2.2. The average deviation of the DeltaE gray scale is 4.49, and the maximum deviation is 6. The average error in the ColorChecker24 test was 3.65, with a maximum error of 8.23. The color gamut exceeds the sRGB standard — the area of the triangle is 87% of the AdobeRGB gamut.

In the True Color program, you can calibrate the screen — for this, however, you need to have a colorimeter. This manipulation noticeably improves the quality of the image. Thus, the deviation of DeltaE on the gray scale decreased to 0.84, and the average deviation in the ColorChecker24 test was 3.65. With these results, MSI P65 Creator 9SF can be recommended to users who need a high-quality display with accurate color reproduction in a laptop.

As in the case of other IPS matrices, the Glow effect of the AU Optronics AUO41EB appears mainly on a black field, and is almost invisible on color images. Of the additional pluses, I note that I did not find any light on the edges of the screen in the test sample, and the matrix used can also be classified as a Flicker-Free solution in the entire working brightness range.

As for the sound quality, everything is not so simple. Yes, MSI P65 Creator 9SF supports Hi-Res Audio standard. Yes, the laptop speakers have a very high volume level. However, the sound of the MSI P65 Creator 9SF as a whole is flat, the speakers clearly lack bass.

⇡#Laptop performance in resource-intensive programs

So, in the test model, an 8-core Core i9-9880H is soldered. This chip supports Hyper-Threading technology, and its nominal clock frequency is 2.3 GHz. At the same time, the Turbo Boost function allows the processor to operate at a frequency of 4 GHz when all cores are loaded. The six-core Core i7-8750H, let me remind you, operates at a frequency of 3.9 GHz under similar conditions. At the same time, with a single-core load, the Core i9-9880H can generally operate at a frequency of 4.8 GHz. As often happens, in real conditions, the performance of a mobile 8-core is strictly tied to the capabilities of the laptop’s cooling system, as well as to the TDP value, because the manufacturer can change this parameter within ± 10 W. The default value is 45W. In just a few seconds, the TDP level can be increased to 90W. All this seems to hint: the Core i9-9880H can work in completely different ways in different laptops.

The MSI P65 Creator 9SF was first tested in Balanced mode. As always, I remind you that programs of the LinX caliber load the processor-memory subsystem very heavily. Even in program version 0.7.0, the processor reaches its power limit quite quickly. The screenshot above clearly shows that the frequency of the Core i9-9880H drops below the nominal value by 200 MHz — this phenomenon is called throttling. The hottest processor core reached 96 degrees Celsius, and the noise level, measured from a distance of 30 cm, was 38.3 dBA — an excellent acoustic indicator, by the way. CPU throttling is caused by excessive heat.

You can judge this at least by the fact that when you turn on the «High performance» mode and the Cooler Boost function, the frequency of the Core i9-9880H increased by 200 MHz. Throttling is gone, but we can see that Turbo Boost still didn’t activate under these conditions. Fans, rotating at maximum frequency, earned noticeably louder, and the noise level of the laptop was 48.9 dBA — this is already an uncomfortable indicator.

Using the Extreme Tuning Utility program, I was able to reduce the processor voltage by 0.12 V. This downvolting was enough to raise the frequency of the 8-core processor to 2.9 GHz. Now this is a serious result!

Interestingly, in less resource-intensive programs that nevertheless use all the processor cores, without downvolting, the Core i9-9880H frequency also does not stay at a stable 4 GHz. For example, in Adobe Premier Pro 2019, it changes in the range of 2.8-3 GHz. In other renders, it can reach 3.4 GHz. In all cases, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF works at its maximum in the High Performance mode — in the screenshots, we see that the temperature of the hottest cores of the Core i9 reaches 96-98 degrees Celsius. This is how a laptop is configured, which is “sharpened” to perform complex tasks as quickly as possible. When downvolting, the processor frequency increases to 3.6-3.8 GHz.

Of course, it is necessary to take into account the fact that we are dealing with a light and compact laptop. The main thing is that the device works stably and lasts a very long time — up to the absolute obsolescence of the base component.

And yet, something tells me that the Core i9-9880H will not be able to operate at 4 GHz with a power limit of 45 W — these are too severe restrictions for an 8-core processor. Well, for sure, in the future, more laptops with such a CPU will visit our test lab — and I will definitely check this assumption.

Above in the graphs, you can see how the performance of the laptop changes over time — of course, it falls, as the frequency of the central processor decreases due to restrictions. Downvolting again somewhat corrects this situation.

The MSI P65 Creator 9SF is not the first octa-core laptop we’ve tested. Recently, our website published a review of the Acer Predator Helios 500 model, which has a Ryzen 7 2700. Well, we see that the Core i9-9880H is consistently faster than the AMD chip. The eight-core Intel consistently outperforms its predecessor, the 6-core Core i7-8750H, by an average of 20%.

In general, it is clear that the Core i9-9880H is a really cool tool for the job.

But wait! At the very beginning of the article, I said that the MSI P65 Creator 9SF belongs to the class of NVIDIA Studio notebooks. I have already talked about MSI software. The laptop uses the Max-Q version of the GeForce RTX 2070 graphics and the Studio driver is installed, which optimizes the work of the GPU with «creative» programs. I think it will hardly be a secret for anyone that the GPU performs some tasks noticeably faster than the CPU. Examples are given above. We see that the GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q is faster than the Core i9-9880H by 72% in Blender and 84% faster in Adobe Premier Pro 2019. The difference is enormous.

That is why the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is positioned as a powerful and (keyword) versatile work system. In some projects, the CPU is better, in others, the GPU.

By the way, in the graphs above, the hero of the review is compared with the Dell XPS 15 model — this laptop is also chosen for a fairly high level of performance, because with a fairly compact size and modest weight, it has a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (also Max-Q) and a Core i7-8750H . However, we see that the MSI P65 Creator 9SF turns out to be much faster in the designated tasks — especially when the GeForce RTX 2070 comes into play.

NVIDIA has been doing a lot lately to advance ray tracing in games. Here, at the E3 exhibition, several interesting AAA releases were announced at once, which will support DXR. For example, I’m really looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077. A screenshot of the OctaneRender benchmark shows that RT blocks speed up real-time rendering by three times.

⇡#Laptop performance in games

The MSI P65 Creator 9SF is not a gaming laptop. This is hard to believe when the system uses the GeForce RTX 2070. Of course, the term “non-gaming laptop” means that the target audience of such devices will create content more than consume it. Still, we tested the MSI P65 Creator 9SF as if it were a gaming laptop.

I must say that games are a rather serious type of load for this laptop, as both the central processor and the graphics core are very hot. The GPU frequency in The Witcher varies from 1275 to 1365 MHz — these are fairly standard values for Max-Q graphics. So that you understand what we are talking about, I will add that the mobile version of the GeForce RTX 2070 operates at a frequency of 1470-1755 MHz without any restrictions. In gaming, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF has a noise level of 42.7 dBA.

Using the Cooler Boost function, you can reduce GPU heat immediately by 4 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the frequency of the graphics chip will increase slightly and stop dropping below 1305 MHz. True, the noise level will increase to 49 dBA. In this mode, it is comfortable to use a laptop only with headphones.

The cooling system of the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is located close to the keyboard, so the latter gets quite hot. Unfortunately, not everyone will be comfortable using a laptop at such moments. And it certainly will not work to place the device on your lap. Complex tasks MSI P65 Creator 9SF must perform on a flat and solid surface.

Above in the graph you can see the results of testing the MSI P65 Creator 9SF in the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark. Well, if we take the result of only the graphics subtest, then the full mobile version of the GeForce RTX 2070 is 26% faster.

Nevertheless, the GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q is great for modern games in Full HD resolution using maximum or near maximum graphics quality. The display in the MSI P65 Creator 9SF, as we know, supports 4K resolution, but in such conditions you will have to reduce the quality to the “High” or even “Medium” presets. In my opinion, it’s easier to lower the resolution — Full HD looks great on a 15-inch screen.

⇡#Performance of the disk subsystem

One of the prerequisites for laptops belonging to the NVIDIA Studio cohort is the presence of a fast NVMe drive. The MSI P65 Creator 9SF has two of them installed at once. Do not forget that the final result in processes such as data archiving, photo processing and video conversion is also affected by the speed of the drive used in the system.

According to the specifications, the Samsung MZVLB512HAJQ NVMe SSD itself has a high level of performance — 3000 and 1700 MB / s in linear read and write operations, respectively. However, in MSI P65 Creator 9SF, these SSDs are additionally combined into a RAID0 array. Yes, there is no doubling of performance, and popular benchmarks still show that the read speed of the RAID array still remains at ~ 3200 MB / s. And yet, compared to the performance of a single drive, there is a noticeable increase in performance in sequential write operations.

⇡#Offline work

Taking into account the set of hardware used in the laptop, as well as its weight and dimensions, we can safely say that the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is a good «camping» option. The hardware in the laptop is top-end, and the battery capacity is 82 Wh. With a light load (web surfing or watching a video), the laptop lasts more than five hours without being connected to an outlet. So the manufacturer’s claims that the laptop is capable of working for 8 hours without being plugged into an outlet look quite plausible, because during our testing the screen brightness was ~ 200 cd / m2 — if necessary, it can be reduced by N times. Testing, by the way, was carried out in the Super Battery mode of the Creator Center program.

When turned off, the laptop battery charges in about 2 hours.

Battery life, 200 cd/m2
Web (opening tabs in Google Chrome) 5 h 10 min
Video viewing (4K, x265, HEVC) 5 h 1 min

⇡#Conclusions

The MSI P65 Creator 9SF is a very powerful laptop and is really up to the task. The test version is equipped with the coolest 8-core Core i9 processor and GeForce RTX 2070-level graphics — as we found, both components prove to be useful in applications where content creators work. The remaining components are selected so as not to think about upgrading the system at all. At the same time, the laptop has an excellent 4K display, a comfortable keyboard and a sufficient number of modern ports. For complete happiness, only a card reader is missing, because we are talking about a laptop for creators, many of whom will want to use it to process footage.

Important clarification: MSI P65 Creator 9SF is a compact powerful laptop. And here we must understand that the manufacturer had to make compromises. Indeed, the test model heats up quite seriously, but MSI assures that nothing threatens the device — the computer will work stably for many years. We cannot verify this, as you understand, in such a short time.

And finally, the MSI P65 Creator 9SF is a powerful, expensive laptop. And there is a small dilemma here. We have found that upgrading system components (storage devices) in a laptop is noticeably more complicated. At the same time, this mobile computer is designed for creative people who need powerful hardware. It may happen that a model with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD will cease to suit you very quickly, and you will not want to disassemble the device almost completely. In this case, if you are interested in the MSI P65 Creator 9SF, I recommend looking immediately towards a more productive version of this laptop.
