A good half of modern external SSDs are equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface, and therefore their linear read / write speed, as a rule, does not exceed ~ 500 MB / s. And although this is already several times faster than external hard drives, it is still not enough for a number of users. In this selection, I propose to consider only those drives that are equipped with more nimble interfaces and can provide a speed of at least 900 MB / s.

Hikvision Elite7 Touch

Hikvision is the world’s largest manufacturer of video surveillance systems, which has been producing solid state drives for several years. The Elite7 Touch is the flagship solution from this Chinese brand. The amount of memory is 500 GB / 1 TB.

In addition to 1060MB/s read/write speed, the Elite7 Touch boasts a 5-year warranty and an IPX7 waterproof design. On the front side is a fingerprint scanner, which complements the hardware encryption function. Drive dimensions: 83.5 x 53.5 x 7.9 mm with a weight of ~ 75 g.

Orico RV500

Orico does not have a fingerprint scanner, but it does have dynamic RGB lighting. The highlight animation changes when copying files from/to the SSD is completed. So you can determine the moment when all the necessary files will be written to the SSD without looking at the monitor.

You won’t have to wait long for this moment, because thanks to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, the speed of ~ 940 MB / s is provided. Dimensions RV500: 109 x 40 x 14 mm. Memory options are available from 256 GB to 1 TB.

Netac ZX

The most profitable drive in this selection in terms of rub./GB. Housing Netac ZX is made of aluminum alloy, while the drive is relatively light: 36.5 g with dimensions of 105 x 34 x 10 mm. Thanks to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, linear read/write speeds of over 930MB/s are achieved. Includes two cables (USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C), as well as a leather case.

Kingston XS2000

The number «2000» in the name of the model is associated with the speed characteristics of this drive: up to 2000 MB / s. It owes this speed to the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface. The implementation of this interface is possible only in the Type-C connector, and if this drive is connected to the Type-A connector, the speed will be about half as much, at best.

The Kingston XS2000 is protected against dust and water in accordance with the IP55 standard. Memory capacity: from 500 GB to 2 TB. The case is made of metal and plastic, and a protective silicone case is also included. The XS2000 weighs only 29g and measures 69.5 x 32.6 x 13.5mm.

King Spec Z4

The case of the KingSpec Z4 external drive is made of aluminum alloy with a piano lacquer finish. The width at the narrowest part is 30.5 mm, at the widest part it is 37 mm, and the length is 112.3 mm. Memory capacity — from 128 GB to 1 TB. The USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface allows this drive to reach read/write speeds of 900+ MB/s.

SanDisk Extreme

The SanDisk Extreme line of drives includes instances with various versions of the USB 3.2 interface. The older models E61 and E81 provide speeds of 1000 MB / s and 2000 MB / s, respectively.

All versions are equipped with an eyelet for easy transport and offer IP55 water and dust resistance. The cases are impact-resistant and designed to endure falls from a height of up to 2 meters without significant harm.

Orico iMatch IV300

Just like SanDisk, Orico has a model with a comfortable eyelet. However, IV300 is more compact, such a drive can even be used as a key fob. The IV300 measures 69 x 32 x 10mm and weighs 35g without wires.

The drive is available in red, blue, black and silver. Available memory options: from 250 GB to 1 TB.

Samsung X5

The fastest and heaviest external SSD in this collection. Samsung X5 is equipped with Thunderbolt 3 interface, linear read and write speeds reach 2800MB/s and 2300MB/s respectively. Weight — an impressive 150 g with dimensions of 119 x 62 x 19.7 mm.

Such dimensions made it possible to place a full-fledged radiator inside, thanks to which the speed indicators remain stable even with a long load.

Orico SV100

In terms of weight and dimensions, the SV100 is close to the previous drive, but here it is due to additional protection and a Type-C cable that is housed in the case. In addition, the kit also includes a cable with a Type-A plug.

The SV100 is available in blue and black, comes with a 3-year warranty, and is up to 940MB/s. The SSD measures 124 x 60 x 16mm and weighs 124g.

Adata SE800

Don’t let the modest looks of the SE800 fool you, it’s the most secure SSD in this collection. It’s dustproof and waterproof to IP68, which means it’ll survive extended submersions (with the cap closed).

In addition, the strength of the SE800 case complies with the military standard MIL-STD-810G 516.6. The read and write speeds are at the level of ~ 900 MB / s.

Gradually, USB 3.2 Gen 2 drives are replacing older USB 3.2 Gen 1 drives, so there will be even more interesting smart models over time. Among the Netac ZX, KingSpec Z4 and Adata SE800 mentioned above, they offer the best value for money, although they are not the fastest.
